If-clause
If-clause (ประโยคสมมติเหตุการณ์) แบ่งออกได้เป็น 4 แบบ คือ
1. Zero Condition (Real condition) คือ ประโยคเงื่อนไขหรือประโยคสมมติเหตุการณ์ที่เป็นจริงตลอดกาล มีโครงสร้างดัง

If + Present simple tense, Present simple tense
|
เช่น If water boils, it changes into steam.
If you heat water, it boils.
2. First Condition (Possible condition) คือ ประโยคเงื่อนไขหรือประโยคสมมติเหตุการณ์ที่อาจจะเกิดขึ้น หรือไม่เกิดขึ้นก็ได้ในปัจจุบันและอนาคต

If + Present simple tense, Future simple tense
|
เช่น If Peter is lazy, he will fail the final examination.
If the rain stop soon, it will go to swim.
3. Second Condition (Impossible condition) คือ ประโยคเงื่อนไขหรือประโยคสมมติเหตุการณ์ที่เป็นไปไม่ได้ หรือไม่มีทางเกิดขึ้นจริงในปัจจุบันและอนาคต
| If + Past simple tense, would/could/might + V.inf

เช่น If I lived near my office, I would come to work early.
If I were you, I would study hard.
4. Third Condition (Unreal condition) คือ ประโยคเงื่อนไขหรือประโยคสมมติเหตุการณ์ที่ตรงข้ามกับความเป็นจริงในอดีต
| If + Past perfect tense, would/could/might + have + V. 3

เช่น If I had time, I would have finished the work yesterday.
If I had known before, I would have come to your party.
