Past Continuous Tense หรือ Past Progressive Tense ใช้ในกรณีต่อไปนี้

เหตุการณ์นั้นกำลังดำเนินอยู่ในอดีตและมีการบ่งบอกเวลาอย่างชัดเจน
Yesterday, at 3.00 p.m. he was playing tennis.
He was doing homework at 9 o’clock last night.

ตัวเชื่อมเหตุการณ์
while = ในขณะที่
as = ในขณะที่
While the teacher was teaching, the students were talking.
She was cooking as I was playing game.

สองเหตุการณ์เกิดขึ้นในอดีต โดยที่เหตุการณ์แรกกำลังดำเนินอยู่และมีอีกเหตุการณ์มาขัดจังหวะ (เหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นก่อนและกำลังดำเนินอยู่เป็น Past Continuous ส่วนเหตุการณ์ที่มาขัดจังหวะเป็น Past Simple)

ประโยคปฏิเสธ
ประโยคบอกเล่ามี was/were (V.to be) อยู่แล้ว เราสามารถเปลี่ยนให้เป็นประโยคปฏิเสธได้โดยการเติม not หลัง was/were ดังนี้
S + was/were + not + V~ing
S + wasn’t/weren’t + V~ing
He wasn’t working at 10:00 last night.
What did she say? I don’t know. I wasn’t listening.
It wasn’t raining when we went out.
ประโยคคำถาม
ประโยคบอกเล่ามี was/were (V.to be) อยู่แล้ว เมื่อเปลี่ยนเป็นประโยคคำถามให้เอา was/were ขึ้นต้นประโยคได้เลย และเรียงลำดับคำ ดังนี้
was/were + S + V~ing
Was she sleeping at 5:00 a.m.?
Were they watching TV at three o’clock yesterday?
Was it raining when you got up?
*คำถามที่ขึ้นต้นด้วย was/were นั้นถือเป็น Yes/No Question ดังนั้นต้องตอบด้วย yes หรือ no เท่านั้น เช่น
Were you wearing a shirt yesterday? Yes, I was.
Was Alex working at 10.30 last night? No, he wasn’t.
ในกรณีที่ถามด้วย Question words ให้ขึ้นต้นประโยคด้วยคำแสดงคำถาม Wh~ แล้วตามด้วย was/were ตามโครงสร้างประโยคคำถาม ดังนี้
Wh~ + was/were + S + V~ing
What were you doing at 11.00 yesterday?
Where were you living in 2005?
Why was she driving so fast?
*ไม่ว่าจะเป็นประโยคแบบใด กริยาในรูป Continuous นั้นจะต้องผันให้อยู่ในรูป V~ing เสมอ

Adverb of time ที่แสดงความหมายว่ากำลังเกิดขึ้น ณ เวลาหนึ่งในอดีค และมักปรากฏในรูปประโยค Present Continuous คือ
at + เวลา + yesterday
at + เวลา + last night
at + เวลา + this morning
when + Past Simple
They were flying over Singapore at seven o’clock this morning.
It was raining very hard at this time last night.
Yesterday, at 1.30 p.m. I was having a drink with some friends.
What was Jane doing when the phone rang?
How fast were you driving when the police stopped you?
