Essay (เรียงความ) ข้อความหลายย่อหน้าที่บรรยายหรืออธิบายเรื่อง หรือความคิดเห็นอย่างไรอย่างหนึ่ง ประกอบด้วย หัวข้อ คำนำ เนื้อเรื่อง และสรุป การเขียนเรียงความเป็นแบบฝึกหัดการเขียนที่มักพบในโรงเรียนมัธยมเสมอๆ เนื่องจากการเขียนเรียงความหนึ่งเรื่องนั้นสามารถวัดความรู้ความสามารถทางด้านการเขียน รวมไปถึงความรู้ในเรื่องของคลังคำศัพท์ โครงสร้างไวยากรณ์ และความคิดสร้างสรรค์ของผู้เขียนได้อีกด้วย
ส่วนประกอบของ essay
1. คำนำ (Introduction)
เป็นส่วนเริ่มต้นของเรียงความ นำหน้าที่เกริ่นนำเข้าสู่เนื้อเรื่องและปูพื้นฐานความเข้าใจให้แก่ผู้อ่าน คำนำควรมีใจความรวบรัดไม่เยิ่นเย้อ และไม่ควรซ้ำกับส่วนสรุปเพราะคำนำจะช่วยกระตุ้นให้ผู้อ่านสนใจด้วยเนื้อเรื่องของเรียงความ
2. เนื้อเรื่อง (Body)
เป็นข้อความต่อจากคำนำ ทำหน้าที่ขยายใจความของคำนำให้ละเอียดแจ่มแจ้ง ย่อหน้าเนื้อเรื่องอาจมีได้หลายย่อหน้า ในการเขียนเรียงความโดยทั่วไปควรกำหนดจุดประสงค์ในการเขียน เพื่อช่วยให้กำหนดขอบเขตของหัวข้อเรียงความให้ชัดเจน นอกจากนี้ก่อนลงมือเขียนควรมีการวางโครงเรื่อง เพื่อช่วยให้เนื้อหาเรียงความมีเอกภาพไม่ออกนอกเรื่องและสามารถนำเสนอความคิดได้เป็นลำดับ ไม่สับสน
3. สรุป (Conclusion)
เป็นข้อความย่อหน้าสุดท้ายทำหน้าที่ปิดเรื่องชี้ให้เห็นสาระสำคัญที่สุดของเรื่อง และยังทำหน้าที่สนองจุดประสงค์ของผู้เขียนให้แจ่มชัด โดยมีความยาวใกล้เคียงกับคำนำ วิธีการเขียนบทสรุป มีดังนี้
3.1 สรุปความทั้งหมดที่นำเสนอในโครงเรื่องอย่างย่อให้ได้สาระสำคัญอย่างชัดเจน
3.2 นำส่วนสำคัญที่สุดของตัวเรื่องมากล่าวย้ำเพื่อสะกิดใจผู้อ่าน
3.3 เลือกคำขวัญ คำคมหรือคำกล่าวที่น่าเชื่อถืออื่นๆ มาเป็นส่วนสรุป
3.4 ฝากข้อคิดแก่ผู้อ่านเพื่อให้นำไปคิดหรือปฏิบัติเมื่อมีโอกาส
3.5 ทิ้งคำถามให้ผู้อ่านใคร่ครวญต่อไปโดยไม่จำเป็นต้องเสนอข้อยุติ
ขั้นตอนการเขียน essay
1. กำหนดหัวข้อและชื่อเรียงความ (topic/thesis)
ก่อนจะเขียนเรียงความใดก็ตามเราจำเป็นจะต้องทราบหัวข้อ (topic) ก่อนเสมอ เพื่อเป็นการกำหนดเนื้อหาโดยรวมว่าเกี่ยวกับเรื่องอะไร หลังจากนั้นจึงระดมความคิด เขียนทุกอย่างที่เราพอจะรู้เกี่ยวกับหัวข้อนั้นๆ โดยการลิสต์หัวข้อย่อยต่างๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้องกัวหัวข้อหลัก ค่อยๆ เลือกหัวข้อที่เราชอบที่สุด แล้วกำหนดชื่อเรียงความของเรา (thesis) โดยชื่อเรียงความนั้นไม่ควรกว้างไปหรือแคบไป
2. ค้นคว้าหาข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับหัวข้อเรียงความ
เมื่อกำหนดหัวข้อหรือชื่อเรื่องของเรียงความแล้ว ผู้เขียนอาจจำเป็นต้องค้นคว้าหาข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับเรื่องนั้นๆ เพิ่มเติม ยิ่งมีข้อมูลมากก็ยิ่งเขียนเรียงความได้ง่ายขึ้น นอกจากนี้ยังช่วยให้ผู้เขียนอ้างอิงแหล่งที่มาของข้อมูลได้อีกด้วย

สไตล์การเขียนจะกำหนดรูปแบบโครงสร้างของเรียงความนั้นๆ ผู้เขียนอาจศึกษาตัวอย่างเรียงความจากแหล่งข้อมูลต่างๆ เพื่อให้เห็นภาพมากยิ่งขึ้นและนำมาปรับใช้กับการเขียนของตัวเอง
5. วางโครงเรื่อง (Outline)
การวางโครงเรื่องจะช่วยจัดระเบียบให้เรียงความของเราลื่นไหล มีความสมเหตุสมผล โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งใน Argumentative essay หรือเรียงความที่ต้องแสดงความคิดเห็นหรือโต้แย้งเหตุผล การวางโครงเรื่องนั้นจำเป็นอย่างมาก
การวางโครงเรื่อง
5.1 เขียนหัวข้อ แล้วตามด้วย topic sentence ของแต่ละ paragraph
5.2 ในแต่ละ paragraph ไม่ควรมีหัวข้อหรือเนื้อหาที่หลากหลายเกินไป
5.3 เรียงลำดับความคิดของแต่ละ paragraph ให้ต่อเนื่องกัน
5.4 ใส่เนื้อหาหรือข้อมูลสนับสนุนในแต่ละ paragraph ให้เหมาะสม
6. ลงมือเขียนเรียงความ
หลังจากเราสร้าง outline ของเรียงความแล้ว เราค่อยๆ เริ่มเขียนไปทีละ paragraph ในระหว่างเขียนแต่ละ paragraph เสร็จ เราควรตรวจสอบสิ่งที่เราต้องการสื่อสารให้กับผู้อ่านว่าตรงกับที่เราตั้งใจออกแบบไว้หรือไม่ ข้อมูลถูกต้องชัดเจนหรือไม่ เป็นต้น ทำแบบนี้ซ้ำไปซ้ำมาจนกว่าทุกๆ paragraph จะสมบูรณ์ที่สุดอย่างที่เราต้องการ
7. แก้ไขและตรวจสอบไวยากรณ์และการสะกดคำ
เมื่อเขียนเรียงความเสร็จแล้ว ขั้นตอนสุดท้ายคือการตรวจสอบไวยากรณ์ การเว้นวรรคและการใช้เครื่องหมายต่างๆ การสะกดคำ หรือแม้กระทั่งการนับจำนวนคำ

2.“Cheating in America”
Did you know that 7 out of 10 students have cheated at least once in the past year? Did you know that 50 percent of those students have cheated more than twice? These shocking statistics are from a survey of 9,000 U.S. high school students.
Incredibly, teachers may even be encouraging their students to cheat! Last year at a school in Detroit, teachers allegedly provided their students with answers to statewide standard tests. Students at the school told investigators that they were promised pizza and money if they cheated on the test as told. Similar allegations at several schools in San Diego county have prompted investigation. A student at a local high school says she sees students cheating on almost every test, and the teachers don’t do anything about it.
The kids claim that they’re tempted to cheat because of peer pressure and intense competition to get top grades. Many kids also say that their parents are setting a bad example by “fudging” on income taxes, lying about age to pay lower admission prices, or cheating their way out of a speeding ticket. They are sending a message to their kids that it is okay to cheat and lie.
Finding solutions to this problem is difficult. In our school’s math classes, each student has different problems on their test papers, so it is useless to look at someone else’s answers. Teachers could also randomly mix the problems throughout the page. Another solution is for adults to lower their expectations. Chances are that students believe cheating is the only way to meet unreasonably high expectations. Perhaps it is time for parents and teachers to seriously examine whether higher test results are important enough to encourage cheating.
