Subjunctive คือ ประโยคแสดงความปรารถนา คำออกคำสั่งหรือคำขอร้อง มักใช้ในภาษาอังกฤษแบบอเมริกัน แบ่งเป็น Present Subjunctive และ Past Subjunctive ดังนี้

1. Present Subjunctive

Present Subjuctive เป็นรูปกริยาช่อง 1 เช่น be, have, get, do, … มีหลักการใช้ดังนี้

V + that + clause + V.inf

    advise that        แนะนำ

    ask that        ขอร้อง

    command that    สั่งการ

    demand that        ร้องขอ

    desire that        ปรารถนา

    insist that        ยืนกราน

    order that        เสนอ

    prefer that        ชอบมากกว่า

    propose that        เสนอ

    recommend that    เสนอ, แนะนำ

    request that        ขอร้อง

    stipulate that        ระบุ

    suggest that        แนะนำ

    urge that        กระตุ้น, เร่งเร้า

    The teacher advised that he not speak loud in the class.
    (ครูแนะนำว่าเขาไม่ควรพูดเสียงดังในห้องเรียน)

    The teacher demands that we be on time.    (คุณครูขอให้พวกเราตรงต่อเวลา)

    I insisted that he pay me the money.        (ฉันยืนกรานให้เขาจ่ายเงินฉัน)

    The manager requested that we be on time.    (ผู้จัดการขอให้พวกเราตรงต่อเวลา)

    I suggest that she see a doctor.            (ฉันแนะนำว่าเธอควรไปหาหมอ)

    The hostess urged that we all stay for dinner.
    (เจ้าบ้านรบเร้าให้พวกเราทั้งหมดอยู่ทานอาหารเย็นก่อน)

Adj. + that + clause + V.inf

    it is advisable that        แนะนำ

    it is desirable that        ปรารถนา

    it is essential that        จำเป็น

    it is imperative that        จำเป็นต้อง

    it is important that        สำคัญ

    it is critical that        สำคัญ

    it is necessary that        จำเป็น

    it is vital that            สำคัญ

    It is advisable that he practice speaking English.
    (สมควรแล้วที่เขาฝึกพูดภาษาอังกฤษ)

    It is essential that he be efficient.        (สิ่งที่จำเป็นคือเขาต้องมีประสิทธิภาพ)

    It’s important that she be brave.        (เป็นเรื่องสำคัญที่เธอจะต้องกล้าหาญ)

    It is necessary that we go immediately.        (เราจำเป็นต้องไปทันที)

N. + that + clause + V.inf

    advice            คำแนะนำ

    demand        ความต้องการ

    insistence        การยืนกราน

    order            คำสั่ง

    proposal        ข้อเสนอ

    recommendation    ข้อแนะนำ

    suggestion        ข้อเสนอแนะ

    request        การขอร้อง

    The demand that he resign made him worried.
    (ข้อเรียกร้องให้เขาลาออก ทำให้เขาวิตกกังวล)

    The insistence that she be on time.        
    (การยืนกรานที่ว่าเธอควรจะเป็นคนตรงต่อเวลา)

    The order that she be punished made her cry.
    (คำสั่งที่ว่าเธอควรจะถูกลงโทษทำให้เธอร้องไห้)

V + (that) + clause + should + V.inf

    He demanded that I should show him my license.
    (เขาขอร้องให้ผมยื่นใบขับขี่ให้เขาดู)

    The doctor recommended that she should take this medicine.
    (หมอแนะนำว่าเธอควรทานยานี้)

    The refugee suggested that the match should be postponed.
    (กรรมการเสนอแนะว่าควรจะเลื่อนการแข่งขันออกไป)

2. Past Subjunctive

Past Subjunctive เป็นรูปกริยาช่อง 2 ใช้ตามหลังประโยคหรือข้อความต่อไปนี้ เช่น

    It’s time …            ถึงเวลาแล้วที่...

    It’s hight time …        ถึงเวลาพอดีแล้วที่...

    It’s hight noon …        ถึงกำหนดเต็มที่แล้วที่…

    S + would rather …        ...อยากจะให้เป็นว่า...

    It’s time the guests went back.        (ได้เวลาที่แขกจะกลับกันแล้ว)

    It’s high time we began to work.        (ถึงเวลาที่เราจะเริ่มทำงานแล้ว)

    I would rather you went to the party.    (ฉันอยากจะให้คุณไปงานปาร์ตี้นั้น)
