Noun Clause (นามวลี) คือ อนุประโยค (ประโยคย่อย) ที่ทำหน้าที่เหมือนคำนาม สามารถทำหน้าที่เป็นประธานหรือกรรมของประโยคได้ มี 3 แบบ ดังนี้

1. ขึ้นต้นด้วย that

ใช้เพื่อบอกวัตถุประสงค์ของผู้พูด

that + S + V

I didn’t know that he couldn’t swim.
We checked that the door was locked.
Everybody was happy that they got a day off.
The woman told me that she was from Sweden.
It is important that you exercise regularly.
I’m sure that he is honest.

*คำว่า that ที่ใช้ขึ้นต้น Noun Clause บางครั้งเราสามารถละได้ เช่น

I think (that) he is a good actor.

2. ขึ้นต้นด้วย Relative Pronoun

ใช้เพื่อเปลี่ยน Yes/No Question ให้เป็นคำนามต่างๆ

Wh + S + V

ขึ้นต้นด้วย what

Please tell me what happened.
Nobody is interested in what you are doing.
I don’t understand what you are talking about.

ขึ้นต้นด้วย who

Do you know who lives in the house next to you?
I wonder who those people are.
I want to know who broke the window.

ขึ้นต้นด้วย when

Please tell me when you arrived here.
We have to decide when we are going to take a trip.
I want to know when you made this machine.

ขึ้นต้นด้วย where

Tell me where were you last night?
I don’t know where my cell phone is.
I wonder where you live.

ขึ้นต้นด้วย how

I want to know how I can use this machine.
I want to know how high the building is.
How much time you have is important when planning a vacation.

ขึ้นต้นด้วย why

Nobody knows why Jane was crying.
I wonder why she quit her job suddenly.
Tell me why you are so late every day.

3. ขึ้นต้นด้วย if/whether

ใช้เพื่อเปลี่ยน Yes/No Question ให้เป็นคำนามต่างๆ
