Direct Speech หรือ Quoted Speech คือ การยกประโยคของผู้ที่พูดมาทั้งหมด โดยไม่ได้ดัดแปลงแก้ไข ซึ่งประโยคเหล่านี้จะต้องอยู่ในเครื่องหมายคำพูด (quotation) เช่น
He said, “I love you.”
She said, “I can’t find a job.”
“What’s wrong, Officer?” I asked.
“My brother is a student,” said Anna.
Indirect Speech หรือ Reported Speech คือ การนำประโยคคำพูดของคนอื่นมาพูดใหม่ให้เป็นประโยคของเราเอง เช่น
He said he loved me.
She said that she couldn’t find a job.
กฎการเปลี่ยนจาก Direct Speech มาเป็น Indirect Speech
1. เปลี่ยน Tense
มีหลักการง่ายๆ คือ เปลี่ยนให้เป็นอดีตมากขึ้น

ตัวอย่างการเปลี่ยนประโยคบอกเล่าจาก Direct Speech ให้เป็น Indirect Speech
He said, “I love you.”
--> He said that he loved me.
He said to me, “You look happy.”
--> He told me that I looked happy.
He told me, “I will leave Bangkok tomorrow.”
--> He told me that he would leave Bangkok the next day.
She said, “I’m very busy.”
--> She said she was very busy.
He said, “I’m learning Korean.”
--> He said he was learning Korean.

ตัวอย่างการเปลี่ยนประโยคคำถามจาก Direct Speech ให้เป็น Indirect Speech
QW + S + V.ช่วย + V.แท้
He asked, “Who do you like?”
--> He asked who I liked.
He wondered “When will they come back?”
--> He wondered when they would come back.
He asked “Did Jack go to Hua Hin?”
--> He asked if Jack had gone to Hua Hin.
He asked “Can you write?”
--> He asked if I could write.
ตัวอย่างการเปลี่ยนประโยคคำสั่งจาก Direct Speech ให้เป็น Indirect Speech
1. ประโยคคำสั่งจะประกอบด้วยคำเหล่านี้ tell, order, instruct, direct
2. เติม to หน้า verb ในกรณีสั่งให้ทำ กลายเป็น to + V.inf
3. ในการสั่งห้าม ให้ใช้ not to + V.inf
4. เปลี่ยน pronoun
5. เปลี่ยน adverb
He told her “Leave now.”
--> He told her to leave now.
He ordered “Don’t make a noise.”
--> He ordered me not make a loud noise.
*ในกรณีที่ประโยคแรกเป็น Present Tense ส่วนที่อยู่ในเครื่องหมายคำพูดไม่ต้องเปลี่ยน Tense เช่น
He says, “I love you.”
--> He says he loves me.
*ในกรณีที่ประโยคแรกเป็น Past Tense แต่ข้อความในเครื่องหมายคำพูดเป็นความจริงตามธรรมชาติ กรณีนี้ไม่ต้องเปลี่ยน Tense เช่นกัน
He said “A cat has four legs.”
--> He said a cat has four legs.
