ประโยคเงื่อนไขในภาษาอังกฤษ (Conditional Sentences) นั้นประกอบด้วย 2 clauses คือ If Clause และ Main Clause โดย If Clause นั้นสามารถแบ่งเป็น 4 ประเภท ได้แก่

I. Present

If Clause ประเภทนี้แบ่งได้อีกเป็น 3 ประเภทย่อย ได้แก่

        1. หตุการณ์จริงตามธรรมชาติ

If + present simple, present simple

If you heat water, it boils.
If a policeman sees an accident, he asks for a driving license.
If there is a fire, the alarm will ring.
Water freezes if the temperature reaches 0oC.

        2. เหตุการณ์แรกเกิด เหตุการณ์ที่สองก็จะเกิดขึ้นด้วย

If + present simple, S + will/shall/can/may + V.inf

If you come, I will teach you.
If you work harder, you may pass the exam.
If you try harder, you will get a better score.
If it rains tomorrow, I’m not going to go to the park.
If you are going to stay home tonight, call me.
If it is fine tomorrow, I will go out.

        3. ประโยคคำสั่ง, ประโยคขอร้อง

If + present simple, V.inf

If he phones, please ask him to leave a message.
If you see Kim tomorrow, can you ask her to phone me?
If I’m late this evening, don’t wait for me.
Turn off the television if you’re not watching it.

*if จะอยู่ต้นประโยคหรืออยู่กลางประโยคก็ได้ เช่น

    You’ll miss the train if you don’t hurry.
    It will be cheaper if we go by bus.
    Do you mind if I use your phone?

II. Present Unreal

ใช้ในกรณีที่เหตุการณ์นั้นไม่เป็นจริงในอดีต เหตุการณ์นั้นไม่ได้เกิดขึ้นในปัจจุบัน หรือเป็นการสมมติเหตุการณ์ที่ไม่เป็นจริงในปัจจุบัน

    If + past simple, S + would/should/could/might + V.inf

    If I won lottery today, I would retire.
    If he were here right now, he would help me.
    If I were Spider Man, I could climb the wall without a ladder.
    If I were not sick today, I would come to you.
    If I had a cell phone, I could call you.
    He would buy a luxury car if he had the money.
    If you didn’t have a job, what would you do?
    I’d help you if I could but I can’t.

III. Past Unreal

ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ที่ไม่เป็นจริงในอดีต เหตุการณ์นั้นไม่ได้เกิดขึ้นในอดีต หรือเป็นการสมมติเหตุการณ์ที่ไม่เป็นจริงในอดีต

    If + past perfect, S + would/should/could/might + have + V3

If you had gone to the party last night, you would have won the prize.
If I had got up early, I could have caught the bus.
If I had gone to bed early, I might have had much more energy.
If I had been rich, I would have helped him.
If I had saved more money before, I could have bought the guitar.
If they had studied, they would have passed the exam.

IV. Mixed type

เป็นการสมมติเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นในอดีต แต่มีผลสืบเนื่องมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน

    If + past perfect, S + would/should/could/might + V.inf

    If I had met him last night, I would tell her today.
    If I had eaten breakfast several hours ago, I would not be hungry now.

เราใช้กริยารูป continuous ในประโยคเงื่อนไขได้สำหรับสถานการณ์ที่กำลังดำเนินอยู่ เช่น

    If it were not raining right now, I would go for a walk.
    If I were living in Hong Kong, I would be working at a bank.

บางครั้งเราสามารถละ if ได้โดยสลับเอากริยา were, had + V3, should + V.inf มาขึ้นต้นประโยคแล้วตามด้วยประธาน เช่น

    Were I you, I wouldn’t do that.            = If I were you
    Had I known, I would have told you.        = If I had known
    Should anyone call, please take a message.    = If anyone should call

ประโยคเงื่อนไขที่ไม่ใช้ If

should/were/had = if

    Should you see Ken, tell him I want to visit.
    Were they here, they would tell me.
    Had he had much money, he would have bought a new car.

unless = if ... not

    If you don’t come today, I will punish you.
    Unless you come today, I will punish you.

as if/as though = ราวกับว่า

    He runs as if he were a cheetah.
    My father drinks beer as if he were drinking water.
    I know a farmer who talks to his animals as though they were people.
