Present Participle

Participle หรือที่เรียกว่า คุณกริยา ทำหน้าที่กึ่งคุณศัพท์กึ่งกริยา มีด้วยกัน 2 รูปแบบ คือ

1. Past Participle
2. Present Participle

ในที่นี่จะกล่าวถึงรูปแบบและหลักการใช้ Present Participle ดังนี้

Present Participle คือ กริยาเติม ing (V-ing) ที่มีความหมายว่า กริยานั้นกำลังดำเนินอยู่  โดยคำว่า Present Participle ไม่ได้หมายถึง present time (เวลาปัจจุบัน) แต่เป็นเพียงชื่อเรียกเท่านั้น

หน้าที่และหลักการใช้ Present Participle

1. ใช้ Present Participle ประกอบประโยค Continuous Tense ทั้งในอดีตและปัจจุบัน โดยจะอยู่ตามหลัง Verb to be เช่น

She is reading a book.
(เธอกำลังอ่านหนังสือ)

They are going to Tokyo on Friday.
(พวกเขากำลังจะไปโตเกียวในวันศุกร์นี้)

He was dancing.
(เขากำลังเต้น)


2. Present Participle ทำหน้าที่เหมือนคำคุณศัพท์ (adjective) แบ่งเป็น 2 แบบ คือ

   2.1. ใช้ขยายคำนาม โดยจะวางไว้ข้างหน้านาม เช่น

   That is an exciting movie.
   (นั่นเป็นภาพยนตร์ที่น่าตื่นเต้น)

   I read an interesting magazine yesterday.
   (เมื่อวานฉันอ่านนิตยสารที่น่าสนใจ)

   2.2 ใช้เป็นส่วนเติมเต็มของคำกริยา เช่น

   This movie was very exciting.
   (ภาพยนตร์เรื่องนี้น่าตื่นเต้นมาก)

   My job is really tiring.
   (งานของฉันมันน่าเหนื่อยหน่ายจริง ๆ)


3. ใช้ Present Participle ตามหลังคำกริยาแสดงการรับรู้ เช่น feel, hear, see, smell, watch, want, get, like, notice… เป็นต้น ในโครงสร้าง pattern verb + object + participle มีความหมายว่า กริยาหรือการกระทำนั้นกำลังดำเนินอยู่ เช่น

I saw the child standing in the middle of the road.
(ฉันเห็นเด็กกำลังยืนอยู่กลางถนน)

I heard my sister singing in the bathroom.
(ฉันได้ยินน้องสาวของฉันกำลังร้องเพลงในห้องน้ำ)


4.  Present Participle ทำหน้าที่คล้าย Adjective Clause (ขยายคำนามหรือสรรพนามของประโยคหลัก) เช่น

The woman standing at the gate is my wife.
(ผู้หญิงที่กำลังยืนอยู่ตรงประตูทางออกคือภรรยาของผม)

ประโยคเต็มคือ The woman who is standing at the gate is my wife.
(ผู้หญิงคนที่กำลังยืนอยู่ที่ประตูทางออกคือภรรยาของผม) 

who is standing at the gate คือ Adjective Clause ขยาย The woman


5. Present Participle ทำหน้าที่คล้าย Adverb Clause (ประโยคย่อยที่ทำหน้าที่เหมือน adverb คือ ขยายกริยา) เช่น

He heard the door open while he was watching TV. = Watching TV, he heard the door open.
(ขณะกำลังดูทีวี เขาได้ยินประตูเปิด)
