Clause (อนุประโยคในภาษาอังกฤษ) แบ่งออกได้ 4 ประเภท ได้แก่

1. อนุประโยคหลักและอนุประโยคย่อย (Independent clause and dependent clause, Main clause and Subordinate clause) อนุประโยคหลักจะประกอบด้วย ประธาน และกริยา ส่วนประโยคย่อยจะมีคำสันธานประเภท Subordinating Conjunctions เช่น when where who that which because if ฯลฯ ประธาน และกริยา
เช่น When the timer rang, the student stopped typing. ดังนั้น When the timer rang เป็น subordinating clause ส่วน the student stopped typing เป็น main clause.

2. Noun clause เป็นอนุประโยคที่ทำหน้าที่เหมื่อนคำนาม
เช่น What he needs is a cup of coffee. ดังนั้น What he needs เป็น noun clause.

3. Adjective clause เป็นอนุประโยคที่ทำหน้าที่เหมือนคำคุณศัพท์
เช่น This is the place where he lives. ดังนั้น where he lives เป็น adjective clause.

4. Adverb clause เป็นอนุประโยคที่ทำหน้าที่เหมือนคำวิเศษณ์
เช่น I saw him when he arrived here. ดังนั้น when he arrived here เป็น adverb clause.
