Appositives


     Nouns อาจถูกขยายด้วย appositives ซึ่งก็คือคำหรือกลุ่มคำที่เราเพิ่มเข้าไปเพื่อขยายความให้กับคำนามนั้นๆ เพิ่มเติม appositives โดยทั่วไปแล้วจะอยู่ในรูปต่างๆ ต่อไปนี้

- คำนามหรือกลุ่มคำนาม (a noun or a noun group)
  Charles, my third brother. (my brother Charles)
  Victoria, the Queen of England. (Queen Victoria)
  London, the capital of England.
  Brown, the man in the next house.
  Brown, the man I was talking about just now.

- Appositives บางทีก็เป็น adjectives
  Peter the Great.
  Richard the Lion-hearted.

- Appositives จะถูกวางไว้หลัง certain noun, infinitive หรือ noun clause ที่มันขยายความ
  your plan to go alone.
  the fact that he is a foreigner.
  the question whether there will be enough food to go round.

- Appositive nouns และ appositive adjectives ในตัวอย่างต่อไปนี้ไม่เคร่งครัดตามหลักการใช้มากนัก คือไม่ได้วางไว้หลัง noun ที่มันขยาย ซึ่งทำให้มันดูเหมือนเป็นการบรรยายบอกลักษณะเสียมากกว่าที่จะเป็นการอธิบาย ขยายความของคำนาม และจะดูกลมกลืนเหมือนกับเป็นส่วนของ complement
  There he sat, a giant among dwarfs.
   Mont Blanc appears—still, snowy, and serene.
   She was like a bird, full of joy and music.

        Participial Phrases เหล่านี้ก็ถูกใช้แบบไม่ได้เคร่งครัดตามหลักการเช่นกัน โดยได้รับอิทธิพลของ adverbial     (as he was…)
  My brother, being a man of strong character, refused the offer.
  My brother refused the offer, being a man of strong character.
  Being old and feeble, he seldom went out.
        วลีต่อไปนี้เราจะละ participle “being” ไว้ คงเหลือเพียง noun หรือ adjective เท่านั้น ซึ่งจะทำให้เห็นความเป็น adverbial ได้ชัดเจนมากขึ้น
  My brother, (as he was…) a man of strong character, refused the offer.
  (As he was…) Old and feeble, he seldom went out.
