วันนี้เรามาเรียนรู้สำนวนภาษาอังกฤษแจ๋วๆ ที่มีส่วนต่างๆ ของร่างกายประกอบกันค่ะ 

Turn a blind eye = การเอาหูไปนา เอาตาไปไร่ หรือการทำเป็นไม่รู้ไม่เห็นนั่นเอง

Ex. It is an ugly truth, meanwhile we all know they acted illegally, we need to turn a blind eye to it.

Apple for someone’s eye = การเป็นที่รักของใครบางคน 

Ex. My sister is the apple of dad’s eye.

All ears = การตั้งใจฟังอะไรบางอย่างมากๆ 

Ex. I’m all ears, tell me about a gossip you’ve heard!

Word of mouth หรือ Word-of-mouth = ข่าวที่บอกต่อๆ กัน จากคนหนึ่งไปหาคนหนึ่ง จนแพร่กระจายไปเป็นวงกว้าง 

Ex. Word-of-mouth is considered the best marketing strategy.

Heads-up = การแจ้งให้ทราบล่วงหน้า เวลามีข่าวอัพเดทอะไรมา 

Ex Our boss just gave us a heads-up on office’s renovation plan.

From the bottom of someone’s heart = ความรู้สึกจากก้นบึ้งหัวใจของใครบางคน

Ex You know I love you from the bottom of my heart.

Achilles’s heel = จุดอ่อนของคน บริษัท หรือธุรกิจ

คำนี้มีที่มาจากตำนานกรีกโบราณ ที่แม่ของอคีลิสได้จุ่มร่างกายของเขาลงไปในแม่น้ำสติกส์เพื่อให้อยู่ยงคงกระพัน แต่มีส่วนเดียวที่ไม่โดนน้ำก็คือส่วนข้อเท้า เลยกลายเป็นจุดอ่อนของเขา ซึ่งต่อมาถูกนำมาใช้กันในแง่นี้นั่นเอง
Ex. I’m trying to lose weight from time to time, but sweets are my Achilles’s heels.

Right-hand man/woman = มือขวา หรือผู้ช่วยมือฉมังที่ไว้ใจได้ 

Ex. I will be away for vacation for two weeks, but if there is anything urgent you can seek assistance from my right-hand man, David. 

Up to someone’s neck/ear/eyes = การที่ใครบางคนงานล้นมือมากๆ หรืออยู่ในสถานการณ์ที่ยากลำบาก

Ex. I’m up to my neck with work at the moment and will not be able to join you guys for tomorrow’s dinner. 
**สำนวนนี้จะใช้กับอวัยวะได้ถึงสามอย่าง คือ คอ ตา และ หู แต่ที่ได้ยินกันมากจะเป็น Up to someone’s neck ค่ะ

(To) Get cold feet = การที่ไม่กล้า ประหม่า กังวลใจในการทำอะไรบางอย่าง  

Ex. Jack got cold feet when asked to sing in front of the class.

Give someone the cold shoulder = การแสดงอาการไม่เป็นมิตรกับอีกฝ่าย หรือทำท่าไม่สนใจ เมินเฉย 

Ex. Is that your ex? She completely gives you the cold shoulder.

Cost an arm and leg = สำนวนนี้มาทั้งแขนและขา หมายความว่า คือการเสียเงินมากๆ กับบางอย่าง

Ex. I’m afraid a fancy 2-weeks trip to Europe will cost us an arm and leg.

Blood is thicker than water = สำนวนนี้คุ้นเคยกันเป็นอย่างดี กับคำแปลที่เหมือนสำนวนไทยว่า เลือดข้นกว่าน้ำ หรือความเป็นญาติพี่น้องกัน ย่อมเข้มข้นกว่าคนนอกค่ะ

Ex. There are a lot of actual examples that prove “Blood is thicker than water” idiom is true.

You scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours. = เป็นการต่างตอบแทนความช่วยเหลือซึ่งกันและกัน 

Ex. As promised, here’s the money, you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours remember?

Have a sweet tooth = คนที่ชอบทานของหวาน 

Ex. Abby eats candy all the time; she really has a sweet tooth.

Pain in the neck = คนหรือบางอย่างที่น่ารำคาญมากๆ 

Ex. He is a real pain in the neck! 
**สำนวนนี้จะใช้กับอวัยวะได้อีกอย่างหนึ่ง แต่จะเป็นสำนวนที่ไม่สุภาพ และใช้กันในหมู่คนสนิท ก็คือ Pain in the butt/ass (ก้น) 

Hands are tied = การอยู่ในสถานการณ์ที่เราทำอะไรไม่ได้มาก เพราะไม่มีอำนาจมากพอหรือสถานการณ์บังคับ

Ex. Our hands are tied because of budget restriction, we can’t do anything much.

A sight for sore eyes = การที่เราได้เจอคนหรือสถานที่อะไรที่ชอบมากๆ 

Ex. This mountain view is such a sight for sore eyes.

See eye to eye = การตกลง เห็นด้วย 

Ex. We are the same team, but we usually don’t see eye to eye for several topics.

Know something like the back of someone’s hand = การที่เรารู้จักใคร หรือ อะไรดีมากๆ 

Ex. He knows this place like the back of his hand, because he lives here for 30 years already.

To hold someone’s tongue = การที่เราปิดปากเงียบไม่พูดอะไร 

Ex. Hold your tongue or you’ll be punished!

A slip of someone tongue = การพูดอะไรผิดนิดหน่อย

Ex. A newsreader made a slip of his tongue when reading out the capital of the country.

Find your feet = การที่เราปรับตัวให้เข้ากับที่ทางใหม่ๆ ที่ไปใช้ชีวิตอยู่ อาจจะเป็นการทำงานใหม่ หรือการย้ายรกรากไปยังประเทศใหม่ก็ได้ 

Ex. Have you found your feet at your new job yet?
Ex. It will take you a couple of months to find your feet in a big city like Tokyo.

Over my dead body = เหมือนสำนวนไทยที่ว่า ข้ามศพชั้นไปก่อนเถอะ! คือไม่มีทางที่จะเกิดขึ้นแน่ๆ เป็นไปไม่ได้ หรือจะไม่ยอมให้เกิดขึ้นแน่นอน

Ex. You think I’m going to lend you $1,000? Over my dead body!
