คำนามทั่วไป (Common nouns) คือ คำนามที่ใช้แทนคน สัตว์ สิ่งของ สถานที่ ทั่วๆ ไป ไม่เป็นการเจาะจง เช่น
คน : boy, girl, man, woman, father, mother, doctor, teacher
สัตว์ : dog, cat, lion, tiger, bird
สิ่งของ : telephone, soap, powder, car, television
สถานที่ : school, bank, hospital, market, restaurant
คำนามเฉพาะ (Proper nouns) คือ ชื่อของคน สัตว์ สิ่งของ สถานที่ เช่น Leonardo DiCaprio, Prayut Chan-o-cha, Ball Jointed Doll, Tokyo Metro Hospital หรือชื่อยี่ห้อสินค้า เช่น Honda, Toyota, Apple, Samsung
