ลองสังเกตดูสองประโยคนี้

A letter is written by Lisa. จดหมายถูกเขียนโดยลิซ่า
จะเห็นว่าสองประโยคนี้สื่อความหมายอย่างเดียวกัน แต่ประโยคแรกประธานเป็นผู้กระทำ นั่นคือ Active Voice ซึ่งเป็นโครงสร้างประโยคที่คุ้นเคยกันตั้งแต่เริ่มเรียนภาษาอังกฤษ ส่วนประโยคที่สองประธานเป็นผู้ถูกกระทำเรียกว่า Passive Voice
ดูเหมือนว่าประโยค Passive Voice จะเป็นการเปลี่ยนมาจากประโยค Active Voice โดยการสลับที่จากกรรมมาเป็นประธาน นั่นก็ใช่ แต่ไม่ใช่ทั้งหมดเพราะยังมีเงื่อนไขอื่น ๆ ด้วย
1. นำกรรมของประโยค Active ไปเป็นประธานของประโยค Passive
2. ใช้ Verb to be ให้ถูกต้อง คล้อยตามประธาน
3. เปลี่ยนคำกริยาแท้ให้เป็น V.3
4. นำประธานของ Active ไปเป็นกรรมของ Passive โดยวางไว้หลัง by
ตัวอย่าง
Active: Mom makes tea.
Passive: Tea is made by mom.
อย่างไรก็ตาม ถ้าในประโยคมีกรรมสองตัวคือ กรรมตรง (Direct Object) เป็นสิ่งของ และ กรรมรอง (Indirect Object) เป็นคน เมื่อเปลี่ยนเป็นประโยค Passive มักนำกรรมรอง (คน) มาเป็นประธาน แต่ถ้าจะนำกรรมตรง (สิ่งของ) มาเป็นประธานจะต้องใส่ to ที่หน้ากรรมรอง (คน)
ตัวอย่าง
Active: She gave me the letter.
Passive: I was given the letter by her.
The letter was given to me by her.
ถึงตรงนี้แล้วน่าจะพอเข้าใจโครงสร้างและหลักการเปลี่ยนมาเป็นประโยค Passive Voice กันแล้ว แต่ยังไม่หมดแค่นี้ค่ะ อย่างที่เราทราบกันดีว่าในภาษาอังกฤษมีทั้งหมด 12 Tense เจ้า Passive Voice ก็มีเอี่ยวเข้าไปเกี่ยวกับ 12 Tense เช่นกัน
