คำนำหน้าที่บอกปริมาณว่า มาก/มากมาย/หลาย ในภาษาอังกฤษนั้นได้แก่ a lot of/lots of/much/many ซึ่งแต่ละตัวมีวิธีการใช้ที่แตกต่างกัน ดังนี้

 

a lot of + N นับได้/นับไม่ได้

He has a lot of friends.                (เขามีเพื่อนมาก)

I eat a lot of vegetables.                (ฉันกินผักมาก)

These days a lot of people use tablets.        (ปัจจุบันนี้ คนใช้แท็บเล็ตกันจำนวนมาก)

Did they ask you a lot of questions?        (พวกเขาถามคุณเยอะมั้ย?)

We like films, so we go to the cinema a lot.    (พวกเราชอบดูหนัง, ก็เลยไปโรงหนังบ่อย)

She hasn’t got a lot of free time.            (เขามีเวลาว่างน้อย)

We bought a lot of food.                (พวกเราซื้ออาหารมามาก)

It costs a lot of money to travel around the world.    

(ต้องใช้เงินเยอะในการไปเที่ยวรอบโลก)

We had a lot of fun.                    (พวกเราสนุกกันมาก)

Peter travels a lot.                    (ปีเตอร์ไปเที่ยวบ่อย)

 

lots of + N นับได้/นับไม่ได้

มีความหมายเหมือน a lot of แต่เป็นทางการน้อยกว่า

There is lots of sugar in the jar.            (ในเหยือกมีน้ำตาลอยู่เยอะ)

Lots of people were hurt.                (มีผู้บาดเจ็บมากมาย)

She eats lots of fruit.                (เธอกินผักเยอะ)

Lots of people like Italian food.            (มีคนมากมายที่ชอบอาหารอิตาเลี่ยน)

He earns lots of money.                (เขาได้เงินมาเยอะ)

 

much + N นับไม่ได้

We haven’t got much money.            (พวกเรามีเงินไม่เยอะ)

Is there much snow in Hokkaido?            (มีหิมะเยอะมั้ยที่ฮอกไกโด?)

I don’t like him very much.                (ฉันไม่ชอบเขามากๆ)

Quick! We haven’t got much time.        (เร็วเข้า! พวกเรามีเวลาไม่มาก)

I wasn’t very hungry. I didn’t eat much.        (ฉันไม่ค่อยหิวเท่าไหร่ ก็เลยกินไม่เยอะ)

 

many + N นับได้ (พหูพจน์)

There are many books in this library.        (มีหนังสือมากมายในห้องสมุดแห่งนี้)

Many people were running in the park.        (ผู้คนมากมายกำลังวิ่งในสวนสาธารณะ)

How many photographs did you take?        (คุณถ่ายรูปมากี่รูป?)

Were there many people on the train?        (บนรถไฟคนเยอะมั้ย?)

I haven’t seen him for many years.        (ฉันไม่ได้เจอเขามาหลายปีแล้ว)

 

*much/many นิยมใช้ในประโยคคำถามและปฏิเสธ ส่วน a lot of/lots of นิยมใช้ในประโยคบอกเล่า และ many ก็สามารถใช้ในประโยคบอกเล่าได้
