Countable Noun (นามนับได้) คือ คำนามที่สามารถนับจำนวนได้ มีทั้งรูปเอกพจน์และรูปพหูพจน์ เราจึงสามารถใช้ตัวเลขนำหน้าคำนามเหล่านี้ได้ เช่น

    one man    ผู้ชาย 1 คน

    two men    ผู้ชาย 2 คน

    three boys    เด็กผู้ชาย 3 คน

ในประโยคภาษาอังกฤษ นามนับได้ในรูปเอกพจน์นั้นจะต้องมี a/an นำหน้า ส่วนนามนับได้ในรูปพหูพจน์นั้นจะมีคำบอกปริมาณนำหน้า เช่น

    Are you looking for a job?            คุณกำลังหางานอยู่รึเปล่า?

    I haven’t got an umbrella.            ฉันไม่มีร่ม

    There are many cars in the car park.    มีรถหลายคันในลานจอดรถ

    I bought some postcards from Paris.    ฉันซื้อโปสการ์ดจำนวนหนึ่งจากปารีส

    He has two pairs of sunglasses.        เขามีแว่นกันแดด 2 อัน

Uncountable Noun (นามนับไม่ได้) คือ คำนามที่ไม่สามารถนับจำนวนได้ เพราะรวมกันอยู่เป็นกลุ่มก้อน ไม่สามารถแยกออกมานับเป็นหน่วยๆ ให้เท่ากันได้ เราจึงไม่สามารถใช้ตัวเลขนำหน้าคำนามเหล่านี้ได้ เช่น

    water        milk        coffee        tea        oil

    sugar        salt        sand        rice        dust        

    air        plastic        clay        paper        money

    meat        cheese    chocolate    bread        honey

    soap        ink        wood        flour        toothpaste

*คำนามต่อไปนี้ถือเป็นนามนับไม่ได้

    furniture    baggage    luggage    information

    news        advice        weather    accommodation

    work        scenery    traffic        permission            

นามนับไม่ได้นั้นจะไม่มีรูปพหูพจน์ และไม่สามารถใช้ a/an นำหน้าได้ แต่สามารถใช้คำบอกปริมาณนำหน้าเพื่อแสดงจำนวนได้ ดังนี้   

การเปลี่ยนนามนับไม่ได้ให้เป็นนามนับได้

เอกพจน์    a/an + ภาชนะ/หน่วยวัด + of + นามนับไม่ได้    

พหูพจน์    จำนวน/คำบอกปริมาณ + ภาชนะ/หน่วยวัด + of + นามนับไม่ได้

            (เติม –s/–es หลังภาชนะหรือหน่วยวัด) 

    a glass of water        (น้ำ 1 แก้ว)

    a bowl of soup        (ซุป 1 ชาม)

    a carton of milk        (นม 1 กล่อง)

    a bar of chocolate        (ช็อกโกแลต 1 แท่ง)

    a cup of coffee        (กาแฟ 1 ถ้วย)

    a piece of wood        (ไม้ 1 แท่ง)

    a loaf of bread        (ขนมปัง 1 แถว)

    a spoonful of sugar        (น้ำตาล 1 ช้อน)

    a bag of flour            (แป้ง 1 ถุง)

    a bottle of ink        (หมึก 1 ขวด)        

    two slices of meat        (เนื้อ 2 ชิ้น)    

    three drops of oil        (น้ำมัน 3 หยด)

    four jars of honey        (น้ำผึ้ง 4 ไห)

    many pieces of paper    (กระดาษหลายแผ่น)

    several bags of rice        (ข้าวสารหลายถุง)

นอกจากนี้ยังมีคำนามบางคำเป็นได้ทั้งนามนับได้และนามนับไม่ได้ ซึ่งโดยปกติมักจะมีความหมายแตกต่างกัน เช่น

    There’s a hair in my food.                    (เส้นผม)

    Her hair is blond.                        (ผม)

    I want something to read. I’m going to buy a paper.    (หนังสือพิมพ์)

    I want to make a list. I need some paper.        (แผ่นกระดาษ)

    Enjoy your holiday. Have a good time!            (ช่วงเวลาครั้งหนึ่ง)

    I can’t wait. I haven’t got time.                (เวลา)
